Atelier Berlin Atelier Berlin offers a perspective on the city of Berlin through the work of four writers and eight artists. Atelier Berlin is the result of Kastalia's Berlin project which took place in 2004 in one of the so called S-Bahnbogen near the Jannowitzbrücke. The book is edited by writer and curator Jurriaan Benschop. Eight artists contributed to Atelier Berlin. Some of them found their motives in and around the city. Others create their own visions in their Berlin studios. The artists work in different media, like painting, photography, film and drawing. The participating artists are: Miriam Böhm (D) Kerstin Brätsch (D), Thomas Brüggemann (D), Marike Schuurman (NL), William Engelen (NL), Astrid Schneider (D), Eléonore de Montesquiou (F) and Jorge Queiroz (P). Four writers give their personal impressions of Berlin in an essay for Atelier Berlin. Former diplomat F. Springer recollects the still divided Berlin of the eighties. Architect Thibaut de Ruyter focuses on one of the architectural masterpieces of contemporary Berlin: the Dutch embassy by Rem Koolhaas. Novelist Adriaan van Dis confesses how he started to love Berlin after initially rejecting the city as cold, ugly and preoccupied by it's past. Editor Jurriaan Benschop focuses on his experience of space in Berlin, while working with eight artists on an exhibition. Apart from offering different perspectives on Berlin, Atelier Berlin also reveals the cultural relationship between The Netherlands and Germany, since in each of the writers contributions there is a Dutch perspective included. Since 2003 Kastalia occasionally issues thematic publications, such as Atelier Berlin. The origin of the name Kastalia Kastalia is the sacred spring at Delphi, the sanctuary of Apollo and the seat of his oracle, Pythia. The spring is said to have a divine power of purification and of foretelling the future. Before uttering her oracles Pythia used to drink from the clear waters of the spring. The name Kastalia refers to the nymph Kastalia who jumped into it when fleeing from Apollo. She drowned. Since then poets like to visit the spring, because it is a source of inspiration to them. ![]() Listen to the sound of the Kastalia spring.
